RESIDENTS are stepping up the fight to save a community 'jewel' in Worthing.
The Sidney Walter Centre in Sussex Road may end up housing the pupil-referral unit currently in Richmond Road but campaigners say that would effectively close the centre to the community.

More than 100 people attended a public meeting at the centre last Thursday.

Acting centre chairman Dave Aiseneault said: "It's a vital part of the community and we are fearful that this could end and it could end quite soon.

"Hundreds and hundreds of people pass through those doors every day – not just the elderly but right down to 13-year-old children."
