The government will commemorate the efforts of the Women's Land Army and Timber Corps in World War Two at a ceremony this month - and local veterans are invited.

The national ceremony will be held at 10 Downing Street on July 23 when around 50 veterans chosen at random will receive their badges from the Prime Minister.

MP Michael Foster said: "I'm really pleased that the Government have decided to recognise the essential war effort that was carried out by the women who were left behind but whose contribution was significant in the victory won.

"I would be interested to hear from anyone who has made an application to go to the event in order that perhaps we can hold a local celebration for those who cannot attend 10 Downing Street."

Local veterans have not yet applied for their award should call 0845 9335577.
