TOWN CCTV system footage is being scoured by police accident investigation officers as a motorcyclist lies critically injured in hospital.
A Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit closed Devonshire Square and its approaches for more than two hours on Wednesday evening as they began a detailed site investigation.
They said a 31 year-old local man was riding a green Kawasaki ZX1000 machine as he approached Devonshire Square from Devonshire Road shortly after 8pm.
The bike was in collision with a black Citroen C2 being driven by a 22 year-old man from the Eastbourne area.
The bike demolished a street bollard. The rider was thrown against a lamp post.
The injured rider was taken by ambulance to the Conquest Hospital with serious leg injuries.
Firefighters were later called to wash down the road.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact the Roads Policing Unit at Polegate on 0845 6070999 quoting Operation Strap.
