Foreign students visiting Hastings are given a DVD advising them how to act to best avoid attack.
The short films form part of a package given out to visiting youngsters by The Safer Hastings Partnership (SHP) - a collective formed by bodies such as Hastings Borough Council and the local police force.

It offers practical advise to students about how to keep themselves safe and helps make them aware of laws and customs in the UK.

It is one of a number of schemes operated in Hastings and St Leonards which has seen a gradual drop in the number of attacks on language students. The number of crimes committed against visiting students is now less than one per 1,000 students.

In fact, the SHP has been congratulated on its work as recently as last April when the town was named one of the best destinations for foreign students by the Italian Association of Language Consultants and Agents (IALCA).

David Furness, community safety manager with the SHP, was even invited to Naples and much of the SHP's work in student safety has been copied across the UK.

Mr Furness said: "The death of Mohammed al-Majed is extremely tragic.

"I am sure it is little consolation to Mohammed's family that this incident is unprecedented in Hastings, but as we have said, this will strengthen our resolve to to continue to do all we can to work together to make Hastings a safe place to live, work and visit."
