Airport ground handling firm Aviance is shutting down its Gatwick operation with the loss of over 300 jobs.
The firm blamed the move on "fundamental changes" in its Gatwick business, including the impact of the open skies aviation deal with the United States aimed at liberalising transatlantic air travel.

One Gatwick worker, who asked not to be named, told the Observer: "I am ok as I have just taken voluntary redundancy, but some of my friends have lost everything.

"The whole thing is going under from August 30."

Mick Rix, national officer of the GMB union, said: "This announcement will not only bring despair and upset to a loyal, experienced and safe workforce, but to the UK aviation industry as a whole."

Aviance employs 5,000 people at airports across the UK and Ireland.
