THe FORMER owner of Crawley Town football club appeared in court today (Mon) accused of cheating the Inland Revenue out of millions of pounds.

Millionaire businessman Azwar Majeed, 32, faces allegations of tax evasion over a four-year period.

Majeed spoke only to confirm his name at today's brief hearing at Southwark Crown Court.

Prosecutor Stuart Sampson said: 'The background to this case relates to large amounts of money going through the defendant's accounts.

'He was originally arrested by the money laundering team in relation to a large amount of cash found in a safety deposit box and as a result of that enquiry, the defendant was charges with cheating the revenue.'

Majeed did not enter pleas at the hearing as an indictment has still not been prepared by the prosecution.

Wealthy Majeed, who owns two companies and drives a Lamborghini, will next appear before the court on August 21.

A six-week trial was set for February 2 next year.

Majeed, of 32 Princess House, North Street, Brighton, Sussex, is charged with cheating the Public Revenue between April 1 2003 and March 30 last year.
