THE LEWES Pound goes from strength to strength and has now received the ultimate accolade - having a Harveys beer launched in its honour.
The new beer, Quids In, will commemorate the hugely successful launch of the town's complementary currency and is already in the Harveys shop in Cliffe High Street.

Hamish Elder, joint managing director of Harveys, told the Express: 'We feel we are quite close to the ideals of the Lewes Pound because we've worked long and hard on environmental concerns in recent years.

'We brewed the beer especially for the launch of the Lewes Pound (an exceptionally well-attended event at Lewes Town Hall last month) and it was really well-received.

'It's a golden Sussex ale which we've used for other things but it isn't usually bottled.'

They are sold in half-pint returnable bottles for £1 + 5p deposit, or just £1 if purchased with a Lewes Pound.

Harveys has also announced a monthly raffle prize for Lewes Pound holders.

Three winning pound numbers will be announced in the pages of the Sussex Express, the Harveys website (www.harveys.org.uk) and at the Harveys shop.

And the first person with the corresponding number on their Lewes Pound will win a Harveys Quids in hamper, and the two runners-up will win a bottle of Quids in.

Oliver Dodek van Heel from Transition Town Lewes, the group behind the Lewes Pound, said the Lewes Pound was circulating well following the release of a second batch of notes earlier this month.

He said: 'The relaunch has been very successful.

'Lots of people have bought the Lewes Pounds, we were at the Lewes Farmers Market on Saturday and we sold £2,000.

'There are lots of Lewes Pounds being used in the town and we are confidant we have enough stock to meet demand.'

More than 120 shops and businesses now accept the Lewes Pound and recent additions to the roster include Lewes Rugby Club, Lewes Golf Club and Glyndebourne.

THE WINNING Lewes Pound numbers for October are: 08235, 11346 and 26113.
