THE PELLS Pool in Lewes has kept its 'head above water' despite another dreadful summer.
In the past few gloomy months the hugely popular outdoor pool has had to weather a lot of sun-free days, but it has still made a small profit for the season.
Russell Beck, a trustee of the Pells Pool Community Association, a group local volunteers
which manages the running of the pool, said: 'It was definitely difficult and put us under pressure.
'Everyone was hoping it would be a better season than last year.
'Nevertheless we are still in front which is great but we haven't been able to put anything away in our development fund.
'We are not in deficit and have proved once again that the pool is viable and we have been able to keep our head above water.'
Mr Beck paid tribute to the loyal supporters of the pool, its manager and the continued support of Lewes Town Council.
He said: 'The reason we are not in deficit is largely to do with season ticket sales and people who doggedly go to the pool regardless of the weather.
'Also it's partly down to the fantastic manager Phil Ransley who is a good at managing the place and keeps it running very lean.
'The vandalism at the pool cost us a few bob, around £1,000 to £2,000 but the town council has stepped in and helped us with the cost of the repairs and has taken responsibility for the repairs.
'The council's support is better than ever.'
Lewes Town Council gives an annual grant of £10,000 and is a member of the trust which owns the pool.
Mr Beck said a disabled ramp had been ordered for the pool and in the coming months disabled toilets and changing facilities would also be added.
