Haywards Heath during the First World War

1914-18 war. South Road, Haywards heath

This picture is one of several we shall be featuring over the next few weeks brought to our attention by Mary Tucker, of America Lane, Haywards Heath.

One of Mrs Tucker’s daughters, who lives at Franklands Village, found them while having a clear out. It is thought they belonged to her husband’s grandmother.

Some readers will be familiar with the places in the images, whereas others may be unaware of the history of the place where they live.

The above photo is Haywards Heath and is dated on the top ‘1914-1918 War’, the First World War. The view shows the bottom of South Road, where it used to go into Sussex Square. The square is now the roundabout which links Franklynn Road, Sussex Road and Hazelgrove Road.

On the corner you can see the awning for Selby Chemist, which is where today the Mid Sussex Times offices are based. In the distance you can just make out the top of St Wilfrid’s Church, which is further up South Road, you can just see the top of it above the shops on the left.

The soldiers are believed to be the London Territorials leaving for the front. They can be seen heading down Sussex Road.

Other photos from around this time and of the London Territorials are also signed with a ‘BT’ and a number.

These other photos were said to be taken by Mid Sussex photographer Bertram Hyde Tugwell, who lived in Franklynn Road, in Haywards Heath.

Mr Tugwell issued many sepia-toned real photographic cards of Haywards Heath, including special events.
