From the Mid Sussex Times dated Friday, September 4 1987

Safe in the arms of Smiling Gale Hall at Hassocks the lovely family of sad-eyed puppies was abandoned in a cardboard box in Broadfield Crawley.

Mrs Hall, of the Happy Breed Dog Rescue Society, has been looking after them, knowing that good homes await the pups as soon as they are old enough to leave their mother.

When the plight of the pups became known more than 20 people offered homes.

But a careful check will be made of the volunteers. “We shall be making sure,” Mrs Hall said, “that they all get good homes.”

One of Haywards Heath’s oldest stores is to close next month.

J. W. Upton and Sons’ furniture store in Perrymount Road, which has been part of the commercial life of Haywards Heath for 68 years, is to be demolished to make way for a new office block.

Mid Sussex District Council last month gave the go-ahead for developers Caplin and Jupp, of Broadbridge Heath, to build a four-storey office building on the Upton site.

The building will provide 1,250 square metres of office space and include parking for 41 cars.

For the Upton family, who founded the furnishings and removal business in 1919, the closure of the store will mark the end of an era.

The firm was started by J. W. Upton in premises in Wivelsfield Road, Haywards Heath, and four years later moved closer to the centre of the town in The Broadway.

In the late fifties the business was rehoused in the former Broadway Cinema in Perrymount Road.

In recent years the store has become hemmed in by office blocks and cut-off from other shops on The Broadway and, with members of the Upton family who still run the business nearing retirement age, it was decided to close.

When London Road School in Burgess Hill was being cleared out prior to its closure many treasures from the past were discovered.

And in the old garage was a find no one expected. A large plaque listing all the names of the pupils from the school who gave their lives during the First World War.

The roll of honour will become a permanent fixture at the Cyprus Road headquarters of the Burgess Hill branch of the Royal British Legion.

Colonel John Ronald, the president of the Sussex branch, unveiled the plaque at a special ceremony.
