A further improvement to Hassocks shopping centre was made yesterday (Tuesday), when Walkers stores opened their new self-service food store in Keymer Road.
This branch is one of a chain of old-established multiple stores numbering over 250 in Southern England.
It brings up to date shopping facilities to Hassocks; with personal service in certain commodities which every housewife values.
Mr F.C. Churchman will continue as Manager of the larger branch - he has been associated with this store for 10 years.
Regular customers will be pleased that all the present staff, whom they know so well, will continue to offer service and advice as previously.
Although the new store is mainly self-service - equipped with modern fixtures and display cabinets - provisions, bacon and cooked meats are served separately by personal service in addition to being pre-wrapped and pre-packed.
This has been found to be beneficial to the customer and gives the housewife the best of both worlds.
Over 3,000 items are stocked in this store. This gives a comprehensive range of goods, including the full variety of frozen foods. There are also a number of special opening offers.
Mr Jack Neal, licensee of the Greyhound Inn at Keymer, will be retiring on April 9, and so will end a long association, going back to 1875, between his and his wife’s families at the inn.
“My wife’s grandfather, Mr Edward Allfrey, took over here in 1875.” Mr Neal told a reporter. “Then my grandfather, Mr G Mason, had the place in 1884, and Mr F Neal my father, became landlord in 1898. I was born here and became licensee in 1931.”
The charming old inn dates back to 1525 and upstairs part of the building is a real piece of antiquity, with low ceilings, a long narrow passage and fine ancient beams.
It was just a beer house when the present landlord took over; now it is fully licensed and Mr and Mrs Neal have succeeded in making it one of the most popular inns in the district
Mr Neal is 63 and served in the Sussex Yeomanry in the First World War.
Neither their son or their married daughter will continue at the Greyhound, the new licensee will be Mr H. W. Lee.
So a long happy chapter in the Greyhound’s history will be concluded.
