A well-known athlete in the county in his day, Mr Henry Albert Hollingdale (74), of Clifton Road, Burgess Hill, died on February 24. The funeral took place at St Edward’s last Wednesday, the Rev. E. H. Marsh (Vicar of St John’s) officiating.
A native of Burgess Hill Mr Hollingdale, as a young man, played left wing for the old Burgess Hill Football Club’s First Eleven. He was also keenly interested in athletics, and, as a sprinter, brought back many prizes and trophies from various parts of the county.
Fishing was another sport in which he participated, and he was a member of the Burgess Hill Angling Society.
During the First World War he served, from 1915-18, firstly with the Royal Sussex Regiment and afterwards with the Essex Regiment. Back in civilian life, he became a member of the British Legion.
A son, Mr R. A. Hollingdale, played county cricket for Sussex. He is now a sports coach in Edinburgh and was unable to attend
the funeral.
Mr A. C. Hollingdale (son), Mrs A. M. Tonge and Mrs D. A. Osborne (daughters) were chief mourners.
Local authority representatives and Southdown officers were seen with some of the new buses on the site of the proposed bus station.
Amongst the first to travel on the new luxury single-deck buses, which the Southdown Motor Services Ltd are now using in three main routes through Mid-Sussex, were representatives of local authorities in whose areas the services will operate.
The new buses, to provide almost the whole of the service on Routes 30, 31 and 36, were introduced on Saturday, but on Friday a series of the buses were on view at Haywards Heath, and Council Chairmen and others took advantage of the opportunity of riding in them and comparing them with the vehicles suspended.
Intended primarily for use on roads where double-deckers are impracticable, the new buses are built to the new maximum permitted dimensions. The extra inches in width allows for extra seats.
Whereas the displaced buses had wooden-framed bodies, these are steel-framed throughout.
The interior roof and sides are lined with cream leathercloth to produce a light atmosphere.
Seats are mounted on raised platforms.
All window glass is of safety quality.
