School football team from the 1920s
St Wilfrids Football 1924-25
Reader Mrs Joan Owen has shared with the Middy a photo from her family album.
Last week we featured another of Mrs Owen’s photos of a cricket team, made up mostly of boys from Haywards Heath, aged between 15 and 18.
If you missed it in the paper all the photos and pieces on the Memory Lane pages are on our website - www.midsussextimes.co.uk
This photo shows St Wilfrids’ school’s football team for the season 1924-1925.
Mrs Owen’s father Arthur Kingsbury is in the photo with other team members and the school’s headteacher.
When this photo was taken St Wilfrid’s school was on the junction of Church Road and South Road in Haywards Heath.
The school was built in 1857 to serve as both a school and a temporary place of worship for Anglicans in the town.
The head when it opened was Henry Newington.
The school was funded by the Dealtry sisters of Bolnore House. Haywards Heath had no church at this time so services were held in the schoolroom until St Wilfrid’s church was built in 1865.
In 1951 it was felt that the school had outgrown the building, so it moved to Eastern Road in Haywards Heath where it still is today.
Since the school moved the building has been a Christian science church and reading rom, and is now an italian restaurant.
Do you have any old photos you would like to share? Or do you know anyone is the photo above?
If so email middy.news@sussexnewspapers.co.uk or drop in our South Road office in Haywards Heath with any photos you may have.
