School at Wivelsfield shut by explosion will re-open soon

A school closed by an underground power explosion is due to re-open this afternoon.

Wivelsfield School at the village of Wivelsfield Green was forced to close to 146 pupils on Tuesday but told the Mid Sussex Times this morning that it intended to re-open at 1pm today (wed).

Head teacher Jonathan Rowsell said the school had suffered a total power failure at 8.25 am on Tuesday after an explosion in underground cables.

He said: “Our main power supply cable which was underground had exploded.

“We had UK Power Networks on site from mid-day and they worked through the night until 2am Wednesday morning. “They spliced the cable and put a new section in but we had to keep the closed on Wednesday morning to allow the building to warm up.

“We clearly regret having to close the school in such an emergency, but unfortunately there was no choice.”
