Councillor’s actions - We must not cave in to developers
In her letter published last week Karen George complains of lack of support from councillors for the campaign opposing further housing developments in Burgess Hill.
The Burgess Hill Labour Party in its winning campaigns this year has consistently declared its support for the new developments which bring 40 million pounds of benefits including a science park, improved car parking in Wivelsfield, new sports facilities and improvements in public transport, all of which will not be otherwise realised.
We have seen how the town gained Jane Murray Way, the Superstore, the Green Crescent and the Triangle leisure centre from the monies received from the developments of the Western part of the town.
What we will do is fight to ensure that we maintain control over the amount of new housing that is built, and to ensure that the developments work for the whole community : they must deliver the right amount of affordable housing for the local people and their children, not just ‘executive’ housing for outsiders; the promised benefits in the area of education and health services must be delivered to benefit our community, not lost in a general council pot benefitting assorted groups and areas across the county.
Finally we know that the current Government’s relaxing of planning regulations and the ‘presumption in favour of development’ serve to favour their friends in the development companies.
We will fight to further ensure that the community stays in control of the developments and not cave in to the developers. That is how the Labour Party and its councillors will work with the people of Burgess Hill to ensure this is a prosperous and attractive place to live for us and for our children.

Keymer Road,
