Gatwick runway - Disaster for environment

A second Gatwick runway would be an unmitigated distaster for the South-East environment, and for Sussex in particular.

Like Heathrow, Gatwick was in the wrong place at the very outset. Never wanted by the RAF, it was seen by British Airways only as a bucket- and-spade airport. Its electric ground rail link with London is haplessly out of date.

Platforms, bridges and tunnels allow no serious adaptation. In the heart of the difficult Wealden countryside, its road link plunges straight in to the M25, with Croydon and South London lurking beyond.

What Chinese businessman wants to end up there? Ashdown Forest lies to the east, Surrey mansions and the North Downs between it and Heathrow. Housing development in Mid Sussex would be uncontainable.

This idea should be scotched in short order.
