Letter: Diversions again without warning

HAVING had a break of a month or so from the Saturday Market in The Broadway and having enjoyed the “luxury” of being able to get to and from South Road by bus, it came as somewhat of a shock to be suddenly, and without warning, faced with diversions again on January 21, despite the Middy saying in a previous edition that there would be no market for the whole of January.

I am being told by a variety of different people that there are very few stalls. Many have added that they are unable to understand who can justify closing a road for the number of stalls.

Having crossed Hazelgrove Road last Saturday (January 28), I was approached by a gentleman asking me to sign a petition to stop the county council putting up a bus stop adjacent to the first two houses past the car park.

I have already expressed an opinion to the powers that be to the effect that a bus stop at this point would be of little use as passengers are already served by a bus stop on Franklynn Road, close to the roundabout, albeit that a stop by the car park in Hazelgrove Road would be closer to The Orchards. Added to which, this whole stretch of road is already covered by parking restrictions – pedestrian crossing zig zag lines and double yellow lines. Nobody stops there at present; if a bus stop were to be put in, it would immediately encourage drivers to park there for convenience and to save on parking fees. You only have to wait at any of the bus stops in South Road to see this is a regular event; Haywards Heath drivers appear convinced that bus stops have been put there for their sole use.

What seriously worries me now is why is there a concerted effort to put this bus stop in Hazelgrove Road? The number of stalls in the market has gone from the promised 30 to relatively few, but certain locals, as well as county council, seem hell bent on keeping the buses diverted from the town centre – why is this? Is there something we are not being told?

Haywards Heath must be about the only town in the whole country that has a bus service that is not allowed to serve the town on a Saturday. WHY?
