Letter: Extreme alterations for Hurstpierpoint building
READING a letter from Lesley Manning on December 29 regarding Holy Trinity Church in Hurstpierpoint: I was amazed to learn that such extreme alterations to an historic building should be allowed to take place. Who do we of this generation think we are, defacing such a building in this way. Many a man’s blood sweat and tears would have gone into the building of this beautiful church, and the people responsible for proposing this should perhaps bear this in mind, before turning the church into a 21st century folly.
We are after all only caretakers for such magnificent buildings, and should not have the right to do with them as we wish. I’m sure future generations would wish to see this church in or as close as possible to its original beauty, and it should be our job to ensure this to be the case.
If people wish to make their mark on the world, they should perhaps do so by building their own structure, with the thought that in years to come someone would take it upon themselves to deface it in the way Holy Trinity is to be, and see how they would then feel.
