Letter: Hospice’s gratitude
AS we look ahead to 2012 I would like to take this opportunity to thank all your readers within the communities of Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Lewes, Uckfield and surrounding villages for their generous financial support of St Peter and St James Hospice throughout 2011.
With less than 17 per cent of the costs of providing hospice care coming from the Government, it simply would not be possible for us to meet the needs of our patients and their families without this support. Over the course of the past year your paper has reported on the success of many of their fund-raising activities and events.
All our hospice care is provided completely free of charge and last year we supported 532 patients towards the end of their lives, together with their family members, in a variety of ways including inpatient care, support and advice at home, day hospice visits, counselling and complementary therapies.
In order to continue to provide those services we need to raise of £5,000 each day, despite the difficult economic climate I am encouraged daily by the generous financial support that we receive through donations from individuals and companies in our locality.
Finally, I would like to pay tribute to our committed team of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that the needs of those for whom we care are met. On behalf of our patients I would like to express my sincere thanks to each one. With my very best wishes for 2012.
Colin Burgess,
Chief Executive,
