Letter: Is this time well spent?

SUSSEX Police recently published this year’s Christmas Drink Drive campaign figures. As at December 23 they had carried out 6,508 breath tests and had made 154 arrests – a rate of just over two per cent.

At the same time their published statistics show that they are missing or have missed a number of their stated 2011-2012 targets for crime solving including burglary, serious sexual offences, the seizing of criminal assets and resolving domestic abuse. The question is, do the tens of thousands of police hours being used every Christmas to stop motorists represent the best use of what is a valuable and scarce resource? Are the police failing to prioritise the solving of crime which requires skill, effort and persistence in favour of stopping motorists, which require none of these?
