Letter: Support for Mid Sussex housing plan
I’M writing in support of the Labour Party’s submission in response to the Mid Sussex District Plan consultation draft, and in particular their call for all new housing developments to include 30% social housing, in line with existing planning policies.
As a resident of the newly-built estate near Wivelsfield station, I can see first hand the benefits of integrating social housing side by side with general housebuilding projects. In an environment where house prices are historically beyond the reach of many local people, and youth unemployment is a matter of growing concern, this approach gives genuine quality of life for many young families and often a much-needed helping hand onto the housing ladder. Properties are of a uniformly high standard across the development and there is no visible distinction between social housing and those for purchase on the open market. Residents take a mutual pride in their homes and surroundings, sharing the same excitement of moving into a new property, and becoming part of the same thriving community.
We have come a long way from the ghettoisation of social housing in the post-war era, and we should welcome this as a great step forward by supporting the policy wholeheartedly.
