Noise - Feeling sorry for residents

I am writing in response to your article on the “Shockingly noisy cattle grids” on Chailey Common Nature Reserve and feel sorry for the people living near them.

At the time I attended the public inquiry into the proposed works on the Commons regarding fencing in March 2010. We objectors to these works, including the British Horse Society and Society for Open Spaces, did not have a chance over the three days of this process to convince the proposers of our views against. The 272 and adjacent roads were plastered with “Don’t fence Chailey Common” posters. To no avail!

A look at the junction of Beggars Wood Lane and North Common Road shows what can be done by installing cattle grids. A whole forest of warning signs had to be planted to warn drivers of the hazards looming, making sure nobody has time to admire the beautiful SSSI of Chailey Common for fear of missing a chicane right of way! Cars with lights flashing warning other drivers of sheep grazing on the verges, seemingly the only bits of decent grass for them to eat.

An awful lot of taxpayers’ money has been spent in a most wasteful way when there were other ways of keeping the Commons’ flora and fauna flourishing and dogwalkers happy to let their pets run off the lead.

I hope the people bothered by the booming noise of the grids win in their fight for a peaceful’s night of sleep.

Annelies Schlup,

North Chailey
