This could hit trade

ALTHOUGH it is too late to change the decision, I would still like to complain about the change of payment method at the Waitrose Car Park in Burgess Hill.

It has always been the only car park in the area where the charges were reasonable and change was available should you not have the correct money to put into the machine.

Now the cost will double from the December 1 and will change to a pay and display system. No doubt we will have a number of new wardens to pay, at a considerable cost to the council tax payer.

With the token system there was no problem with passing your partly-used token to someone else, as by doing so you were unable to leave.

If you are caught passing your partly-used ticket to someone else it is considered fraud.

We will also, no doubt, be subsidising the 'service' should we not have the correct 60p and have to use a 1 coin instead.

I can see this affecting trade within the town, as if the trading situation wasn't difficult enough already.

In my opinion, there are some very short-sighted people running the council these days – maybe they should have gone to a reputable opticians.

Mid Sussex District Council says that although it owns the land, it rents it out to the Northern Ireland Local Government Officer's Superannuation Committee, which is responsible for the operational side of the car park and not the council.

A spokesman for the Market Place's PR agency said: "This increase will create parity with other car park charges in the area and will be the first since February, 1998. This increase is necessary to keep the car parking facilities in good condition."
