IT IS usually a sign of a good night when there are warnings on the door and ear plugs being handed out at the bar. And Maximum Rock and Roll really did live up to its name.
Despite a disappointing turn out at Brighton's Komedia, the crowd that were there certainly made the effort. With full skirts, quiffs gelled up to the ceiling and more sunglasses than is strictly necessary for a dark club, one could be forgiven for expecting a Jerry Lee Lewis entrance at any moment.
Billed as a night fusing punk with old school Rock and Roll, Maximum Rock 'n Roll presented the Silver Brazilians followed by the Jim Jones Revue.
With song titles such as Iraqdonalds and tributes to Kate Winslet one might think the Silver Brazilians aren't taking themselves all that seriously. However, with fast and furious tunes, belting vocals and even more energy than the groupies at the front, this really didn't matter a jot. Even the guitarist, with more than a hint of Blues Brother tribute act, failed to detract from a simply great set.
And then we have the Jim Jones Revue. On the subject of their debut album music magazine Mojo was quoted as saying: "If Little Richard had written this, he'd still be boasting about it today" .
And who am I to disagree? With frantic fantastic tunes making dancing obligatory, Jones' voice is outstanding. Covering his frustration at a fairly reserved crowd, Jones handed down tune after tune with barely a breath in between.
Having danced my bobby socks off to the two live acts I left the younger, well if I'm honest slightly older but definitely more hardcore crowd, to enjoy The Actionette Djs.
Described as playing a mix of garage-psych, punk-blues, mod, soul and rock and roll excellence, I am in no doubt they would have provided the perfect end to the evening.
All in all a night of fifties rockabilly which refused to rely on gimmicks and fancy dress but instead showcased some fantastic musicianship and incredible vocal talent served to remind us why we continue to perservere with live music, even in a MySpace generation.
Good music, dancing fun and more petticoats than a Jane Austen novel with added starch. What more could a girl ask for?
