The Fletching Singers' summer concert took place on Saturday at the magnificent new theatre at Cumnor House School, Danehill, where a large and appreciative audience was treated to Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Vaughan Williams' rarely performed In Windsor Forest.
The choir, conducted by Nick Milner-Gulland, was in excellent form, singing with sensitivity and panache, and the Sussex Baroque Players, led by James Ellis, provided a sparkling and stylish accompaniment. Six young dancers, in various different and beautiful costumes, performed the dances, which were choreographed by Susanna Cox with great imaginative insight.
The soloists were first-rate: Stephen Charlesworth and Lucinda Houghton were the star-crossed lovers, with Miranda Rogers and Rebecca Steinebach as Dido's confidantes; Dido's Lament was almost unbearably moving. Other parts were taken by Lawrence Olsworth-Peter (Sailor), Hilary Andrews (Sorceress) and Linda Harcourt and Sheila West (Witches), all of whom sang with great feeling.
The Fletching Singers' many admirers look forward to their next performance on December 6 when they will present Handel's Messiah in the Catholic church of St Philip Neri in Uckfield.
