MOURNERS gathered for the funeral in Horsham of Royal British Legion legend Harold Penticost.

A moving service in memory of the Horsham branch president was held at St Mary's Church in the Causeway on Friday September 26.

Mr Penticost's cortege was escorted to the church by three standard bearers representing the Royal British Legion, the Queen's Regiment and the Parachute Regiment Association's Surrey and Sussex branch.

The Rev Joanna Elvidge conducted the service and Bob Penticost, one of Mr Penticost's sons, read a moving tribute.

Sons Steven, Bob and Tony said: "Dad will be remembered by many people not only in Horsham but the whole of the country for the love and dedication he had for the royal family, the armed forces and, of course, the Royal British Legion of which he became president."

The large congregation reflected many of Mr Penticost's service associations.

Among those present included members of the county branch of the Royal British Legion, and the Royal Sussex Regiment.

After the commendation a bugler played Last Post.
