VIEWERS switching on to watch the Olympic opening ceremony today (Friday August 9), will see an animation that is the brainchild of a Horsham cartoonist.

Graphic artist Jamie Hewlett was asked to design the two-minute animated sequence for BBC television's coverage of the Beijing Olympics.

Jamie, co-creator of cartoon band Gorillaz with Damon Albarn, came up with the concept of the 'Monkey: Journey to the West', based on the popular TV programme 'Monkey' and a 16th century Chinese novel.

Jamie, 40, grew up in Horsham where he attended Tanbridge House School.
It was here that his passion for art developed, and he contributed to the artwork for a proposed road safety campaign.

He went on to attend Northbrook Art College in Worthing and co-created the cult 1980s cartoon Tank Girl before forming Gorillaz with ex-Blur frontman Damon Albarn in 1998.

The height of the BBC's expectations made 'Monkey: Journey to the West' Jamie's most challenging animation yet, but he is pleased with the result.

"It's gone through so many changes because there are so many departments at the BBC, and the Olympics is their biggest gig of the year," he said.
