Musical genius is the theme for Orchestra
THE UNIFYING theme for the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra concert on May 16 is Joseph Haydn whose musical genius influenced many of the early 19th Century composers.
Haydn's second cello concerto in D shows the composer at his lyrical best where the subtle harmonies of the cello are never allowed to disappear into the ensemble.
Technical challenges abound with high-passage work and double stops but there is always a degree of playful robustness that propels the music along.
The soloist is Pavlos Carvalho who appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician in the UK and abroad.
Brahms-Variations on a theme of Haydn Op. 56 was based on an attractive woodwind piece which Haydn composed, borrowing an older tune called the St Anthony Chorale.
It is a fascinating stroll through the orchestra using all instruments in various combinations through the eight variations and culminating in a dazzling finale passacaglia with festive sparkle from the triangle.
Beethoven's Symphony No.1 in C, first performed in Vienna in 1800, has four strongly contrasting movements.
The fourth piece will be the Overture from Haydn's massive oratorio The Creation.
The concert is at the BHSO usual venue at St Andrew's Church, Junction Road, Burgess Hill, at 7.30pm on Saturday May 16.
Tickets can be obtained at the Burgess Hill Town Council Help Point in Church Walk or the Brighton Festival Fringe Box Office with limited availability at the door.
