Talons soar like Eagles at Burgess Hill

Eagles tribute band Talon played a storming set at Burgess Hill.

I must confess I do get the same nagging doubts whenever I go to a tribute band.

What am I doing here?

Am I sad? Should I see a music head shrink?

Why go chasing musical shadows?

Then the first chords of some glorious songbook come together as I sip my beer and I remember why I came.

It's the live music and the brilliant songs. They outshine the mere mortals on stage and they will certainly outlive them.

It helps a lot if the band on stage are good enough to do the songs justice.

And from the moment they opened with the gloriously moody and five star Hotel California the Eagles tribute kings Talon certainly did that at the Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill.

The Eagles sound at its smoothest is too shiny by far for many hard rockers, but underneath the gloss Talon brilliantly interpreted the choppy currents and dark lyrics.

So we got stunning replays of great album tracks like Witchy Women (my personal fave Eagles number)

Wedding in the Weeds and Pretty Maids All in A Row as well as the greatest hits.

All this was underpinned by brilliant musicianship.

Just as sure-footedly, they painted the poignant lonliness of Desperado and the bitter deceipt beneath the attractive lilting Lyin Eyes.

As someone who loves live music I'd rather see Talon on stage than sit at home and listen to Eagles albums.

Maybe that's what great tribute bands are really about.
