Garden of the Week: 46 Westup Farm Cottages

HIDDEN away up a winding lane, 46 Westup Farm Cottages, Balcombe, is one of the smallest but most rewarding of all the Sussex National Garden Scheme gardens.

And it is open to members of the public on Wednesday April 30, May 21 and June 25.

Chris and Sarah Cornwell have turned the garden of Number 46 into a delight for plant lovers and something of an optical illusion: intimate paths, unusual plants, subtle use of texture and foliage have turned a ten-minute garden into one where an hour and a half slips happily by.

The Cornwells have worked their magic in the teeny vegetable patch too: not only does it look good but by clever use of space they've become virtually self sufficient.

If you want to be inspired about how to make the most of a small garden, take a trip to 46 Westup Farm Cottages. Open three times this year, it'll be different each time and you'll love it.

46 Westup Farm Cottages, Balcombe, RH17 6JJ (turn off B2036 at Balcombe Primary School & follow signs). Open on Wednesday April 30, May 21 & June 25, 12 noon - 5pm, adults 2.50, children free.

As part of the National Gardens Scheme, gardens open for charity. They raise money for Macmillan Cancer, Marie Curie & nursing and gardening charities.
