Garden of the Week: Great Lywood Farmhouse

GREAT Lywood Farmhouse, Ardingly, with wonderful views of the South Downs is opening as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

This rapidly maturing terraced garden by owners Susan and Richard Laing puts the finishing touch to the perfect house in the perfect location.

In 1997 the Laings decided that a couple of acres of their surrounding farmland could usefully be transformed into a garden, so with the help of heavy machinery, a few friends and a cunning plan they shifted tons of earth and began creating what you can see today.

Now you can stroll along the Long Walk, explore Diki's Dell, admire the Rose Border, get overcome by the scent of Wisteria Walk, look enviously at the Kitchen Garden, investigate the Scottish Garden, even get on centre court in their Wimbledon Garden.

There's more of course, and each year as the garden ages, it looks better and better.

This year, after May's sun, the roses should be at their best and the borders splendid. And, of course, teas are homemade and excellent.

Great Lywood Farmhouse, Lindfield Road, Ardingly RH17 6SW (2.5 miles N of Haywards Heath, 2m from centre of Lindfield), is open on Sunday June 8, ( 2-6pm), adults 3.50, children free. Also an evening opening with wine on Fri June 20th (6-8pm), 5.
