Garden of the Week: Ham Cottage

HAM Cottage at Highbrook, near Ardingly, is the result of just ten years of hard effort, love and inspiration by silversmith Peter Browne and his wife Andrea.

Opening under the National Gardens Scheme on Friday August 8, Ham Cottage is perched high above the nearby agricultural land and in 1997 was surrounded by brambles and dense woodland.

The Brownes have transformed their eight acres and now the garden boasts bog gardens, a lake, a collection of rare trees and species azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, an organic vegetable garden and an imaginative 'jungle' garden using banana plants, loquat bushes, cannas and palms.

The formal garden near the house also has walled raised beds of herbaceous and perennials, but the real surprise for green enthusiasts are the energy saving devises: solar powered heating for the greenhouse and cottage, photovoltaic modules and wind turbine for lighting.

Ham Cottage, Highbrook, Ardingly RH17 6SR (5 miles N of Haywards Heath. 1m S of Ardingly turn off B2028 into Hammingden Lane), is open on Friday August 8, 5–9pm, 5.
