Garden of the week: Pembury House

Pembury House is opening on special days over the next two weeks as part of the National Garden Scheme.

It will open from February 26 to February 28 and March 4 to March 6, 11am to 4pm. Adults 3, children free.

One of the earliest gardens to open for the NGS in 2008, Pembury, of Clayton near Ditchling, is a true spring delight.

Pembury has been the home of Jane and Nick Baker for the last 25 years.

The house, set just below the glorious South Downs, was surrounded by fields when they first arrived. Over the years they have added and planted and now there's woodland, secret corners, winding paths and a display of springtime colour.

This year they are opening six times for the NGS.

Tea and cakes are available with all proceeds going to the NGS, which has been opening fine gardens to the public to raise money for charity for 80 years.

All gardens open under the scheme can be found in the NGS Yellow Book (available from most good bookshops) or online at www.ngs.org.uk.

Pembury House, Ditchling Road (New Road), Clayton, nr Hassocks, BN6 9PH (six miles north of Brighton on B2112).
