Garden of the Week: Newtimber Place

SET picturesquely in the gently rolling South Downs, Newtimber Place is opening as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

And as if the setting was not enough, the elegant 17th century flint and brick house is surrounded by a wide moat on all four sides, making it quite one of the most mouth-watering locations imaginable.

Parking in a field outside the moat, the house is reached by crossing an imposing bridge, wide enough for horse drawn carriages but not enough apparently for a contractor's mower, which last year ended up face down in the water!

You can enjoy an unhurried amble around the inner garden and its immaculate lawns and be amused by the antics of the Indian Runners before heading off towards the woods.

Having worked up an appetite, it's back for tea and cakes by the Millennium Bridge. And a matinee performance by the ducks, chicken and fish.

Newtimber Place, Newtimber BN6 9BU (take A281 off the A23 7m N of Brighton), is open on Sunday August 31 (2pm–5.30pm, adults 3.50, children free).
