GALLERY: Fernhurst Revels

Fernhurst Revels escaped the worst of the rain that threatened on Sunday, much to the relief of the organising committee after six months of preparation.

The event is more than a village fete - it continues a 100-year-old tradition in Fernhurst when the May queen is crowned and St George (with Kit Smith in the role this year) slaying a feisty dragon (Finton Rowe).

Ellen Hayward, the May queen, opened the proceedings with a ringing call to 'let the Revels begin'. She was accompanied by four attendants, one of whom, Kerry Edwards, refused to let a broken arm spoil the special day.

Before the official opening, the fancy dress competitions were judged by Babs Munro, Daphne Lawes and Canon Gerry Parrott. Winners of the nursery rhyme class were Millie and Monty Koffman dressed as the King and Queen of Hearts while Amber Blakeman was the best dressed bin bag.

The class for the best dressed wheels proved a runaway victory for Reg Parkhouse who also won the cup for overall champion.

Among the variety of entertainments and activities, there were model train rides, pony rides, an immaculate display of maypole dancing by 20 pupils of Fernhurst Primary School, a dog show, dog agility, the South Downs Gun Dog Demonstration Team, Buzz the Clown, children's games and races, line dancing and live music.

A wide choice of refreshments included hot food, a hog roast, a cake stall, teas and beers.

Village societies and facilities, local charities and local craftsmen and women ran their own fundraising stalls or sideshows
