Talented Luke supports at Clair Hall

Luke Jackson, an 18 year-old singer songwriter from Kent, has set off on his first UK tour supporting Welsh singer songwriter Martyn Joseph (Clair Hall, Haywards Heath, Nov 11, 01444 455440)

Luke, who launched his debut album More Than Boys at Shrewsbury Folk Festival this summer. takes off on tour hotfoot from competing in the penultimate stage of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, the national radio station’s annual search for the UK’s most talented young performers of folk, roots or acoustic music.

Ten shortlisted entrants were selected to attend the Young Folk Award Weekend at The Brewery Arts Centre on October 19-21, taking part in workshops led by top musicians John Spiers and Jackie Oates and performing in a public concert hosted by Radio 2 folk show presenter Mike Harding.

Judging the performances along with Spiers and Oates were Kellie While (Smooth Operations Head of Programmes), Steve Heap (Mrs Casey Music/Towersey Festival) and Pete Lawrence (The Big Chill/Cooking Vinyl).

The judges will now select four nominees to go forward for the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award title .They will be announced on the Mike Harding Show on November 21 and the eventual winner will be revealed at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ceremony to be held in Glasgow on January 30.

Canterbury-based Luke has also appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 2’s Good Morning Sunday, interviewed by Aled Jones, and was one of the artists appearing at Lancaster University’s PipeFest recently, hosted by Martyn Joseph.

The 11-track debut album is a riff- layered rite of passage CD that draws inspiration from memories of childhood camaraderie, Luke says: a lyrical real-time journey from adolescence to young adulthood – in songs that are by turns powerful, passionate, poignant and pop tinged.
