FIREMEN dealt with a large, out-of-control bonfire off Jane Murray way in Burgess Hill last night (September 1).

A passer-by alerted the brigade after seeing flames leaping into the air and thick smoke billowing across the carriageway.

Burgess Hill Crew Commander Ivor Henley said: "As we approached, the flames looked very dramatic and we thought a barn might be on fire at Maltings Farm but it turned out to be a large, out-of-control bonfire whipped up by the wind."

Bright, orange flames could be seen from the road and several motorists pulled over to watch the spectacle. The fire broke out just before 7.45pm and firemen were on the scene within minutes.
