Plans for controlled Parking zones in Haywards Heath and Lindfield have been put on hold after residents and businesses oppose the ideas.
In January, West Sussex County Council published plans for new zones that would impact on residential areas closest to the town centre and the railway station with spaces for permit holders only, pay and display areas and an increase in single and double yellow lines.

Miles Davy, the council's project manager for the parking zones presented the results of the month long public consultation at a meeting of the Central Mid Sussex County Local Committee at Clair Hall last night.

Results showed the majority of residents and businesses were against new controlled measures. John de Mierre, county council cabinet member for strategic planning, proposed that plans are put on hold until town and district councils meet with the county council to discuss the results.

I am totally relieved that the idea of parking zones around the Haywards Heath station area have been abandoned. I live in a private close 2 minutes walk from the station and we already have problems with commuters leaving their cars in the close while they are in London all day. If people couldn't park anywhere else, I could see dozens of cars being dumped every day. A bit "not in my back yard" perhaps but we do get tired of not being able to park in our own spaces which we pay for!

I wish that people would place greater demands/higher expectations on the standard of public transport so that there is less need for parking spaces. A lot of anger from a town that petends to have green credentials!
