SUSSEX Police had to ground their dedicated helicopter amid safety concerns.

Worries about faulty rotor blades and engine problems have grounded helicopters from forces all over the UK, including Sussex Police's H-900.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that on Sunday the air unit at Shoreham was advised that all McDonnell Douglas 902 helicopters had to be grounded because of a possible mechanical fault.

The spokesman explained the helicopter was grounded on Monday and was inspected as a precautionary measure. "It is hoped that H900 will be fully operational again within 24 hours," said the spokesman on Monday. "Essential cover is being provided by Surrey and Hampshire Police."

The reported problem is a rotor tail fault which can cause a sudden drop in height.
