AFTER just missing out on promotion back into senior football last season, Haywards Heath Town FC have lined up a new team off the pitch to spearhead a bold new challenge.
Although the AGM is not until Monday week (June 30), Mark Russ, who claims to be the new chairman-elect, spoke this week of the plans, that include former professional player Mark Beard arriving as director of football.
It is a link with Trevor Bone
, set to take over as the new commercial manager, that has helped persuade Beard to come on board. Both their sons play for Lindfield Juniors, while Russ currently runs Mid Sussex Blues, who broke away from Lindfield a year ago.
Sheffield United paid £117,000 to lure Beard away from Millwall, where he was a trainee, and the full-back/midfielder also had a spell with Southend.
He played nearly 50 times for Stevenage Boro, culminating in last year's FA Trophy victory, and then became player-coach at St Albans for a brief spell before joining AFC Wimbledon, who released him this summer. He is currently a sports coach at Great Walstead School.
Playing in Division 3 of the County League will be a far cry from all of that but Russ is hopeful Beard will be able to persuade another ex-professional, his brother-in-law Geoff Pitcher, to return to Hanbury from St Francis Rangers.
Russ said this week: "Our twin strategy is to get promotion and become a proper community-based club, involving kids and more local people in general. We want to run academies in the summer and get every local primary school involved.
"We want to give it five years to achieve certain goals but we're not throwing money at it, we want to get the community fully involved.
"When I started Mid Sussex Blues the idea was to have a club the youngsters could progress to and that is important.
"One of our biggest issues is a need to promote the club in the right way and we're working with president Roy Hatt to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible."
Simon McMenemy will remain as manager and the club's reserves will continue to play in the Suburban League.
Pre-season training is due to start on July 1 (7pm), the day after the AGM that will decide whether to run with the new regime.
