SHOWJUMPING fans from Mid Sussex had plenty to cheer at this year's Hickstead Derby, with some outstanding performances from local riders and horses.

The biggest success came from Louise Pavitt riding Unbelievable Darco from the Brendan Stud in Pyecombe, who stole the show in winning the Derby Tankard.

Louise, from Copthorne, was clearly unfazed by competing in her first senior competition, setting the standard with an early clear round before snatching victory in an exciting jump-off.

Battling it out in the class were some of the country's top riders, including members of the British Olympic team.

At just 22, Louise is fast becoming a leading showjumper. Among her many successes from the five-day event, Louise was placed an amazing four times on four different horses in the Polyjumps British five-year-old Jumping Championship.

The winner of the DFS Derby was top showjumper William Funnell from Surrey, riding Cortaflex Mondriaan who, in a tense jump-off, rode a clear round leaving last year's winner Geoff Billington in second place with just four faults.

Another local success came from 17-year-old Matt Sampson, based in Cuckfield, who finished third in the Hickstead Young Riders Masters competition on Pit's Daughter.
