Sussex Dolphin ladies lost 3-1 to Dulwich Knights at the Olympos in Hayward Heath on Sunday in what was their last National Volleyball League game of the season.
Dulwich made light work of the opening set, winning 25-8 as the hosts made a poor start, but there were signs of things coming together as Sussex went down 17-25 in the second set.
Some good hitting and a six-point serving run by Tracy Bateman were a bonus but they had left it too late.
Not so in the third set, however, as Joey Phillippo-Nevill set well to create some strong attacks and the block timing was beginning to get the measure of Dulwich. Sussex extended the match by winning 25-21 but the end came fairly swiftly in the fourth as they went down 16-25.
Despite their poor performance on the day, a reasonably consistent campaign has guaranteed Sussex at least fifth place in their first season. A real achievement and a good grounding for next season.
Squad: V Sarsfield (player-of-the-match), T Bateman, S Cook, C Parisy, S Fletcher, M Carrpacquay, J Phillipo-Nevill, S Wood. Coach: J Lock.
This Sunday the men are away to Dartford and TH Lynx.
