Emma off to a flyer

Emma Torkington got her table teason off to a flying start when she won the under 13 title at the Liverpool 4 Star event.
In what was the first major junior tournament of the 2008-2009 season, the Mid Sussex starlet was drawn in a tough group but worked hard to beat Emily Bolton (Cumbria), Jessica Wheally (Essex) and Gabriella Graziano (Essex).
Graziano and Wheally are No 7 and 8 in the national under 13 rankings and Bolton is improving fast.
In the quarter-finals Torkington met Estelle Purkis, ranked No 6. Purkis plays with long pimples on one side of her bat and the Haywards Heath girl had not met that for some time.
Purkis took the first game but the longer the match went on, the better Torkington got at working out the different spins. She proved she was a quick learner by winning the next three to book a semi final slot against fellow England player Annabel Gibson.
Again Torkington lost the first game 11-9 after she had held the upper hand. But playing with real confidence, she carried on attacking to beat the No 2 seed 3-1 in another exciting match.
On the other side of the draw the No 1 seed and Torkington's rival and England team-mate Tin Tin Ho had progessed to the final.
Yet again Torkington missed out in the first, 11-9, and things looked distinctly bleak when she was blown away 11-1 in the second.
That clearly shocked the local girl but it drew exactly the right response, one that her coach Marc Burman described as brilliant.
"Technically Emma was playing better than ever, but she was short of match practice due to resting after the Euros," he explained.
But she was electric in the third, attacking relentlessly with heavy top spins to take it 11-3.
Now it was Tin Tin's turn to be shocked and being the quality player she is, she responded positively.
The next two games were characterised by hard hitting rallies as neither player was prepared to give ground but it was Torkington who clinched the title 11-9, 11-7, prompting Burman to observe: "Emma really had the bit between her teeth in those last three games."
