ANOTHER excellent year for Hurstpierpoint Bowls Club culminated with them lifting the Mid Sussex League Division 1 title for a third time as well as finishing runners up in the John Spriggs League.
The ladies also got to the final of the Top Club and the Inter-Club Double Rinks, while the club retrieved the Millennium Plate from annual opponents Adastra. Hurst now lead 7-2 in the nine years of the Millennium event.
Ladies captain Jenny Goodman
was only one point away from becoming Sussex singles champion and there were several new names on club trophies after a damp start to finals day.
David Welsh lifted the men's singles title for a fifth time although that did not look likely when Jim Morley's tac tics of giving the mat away did not stop him taking a 20-16 lead. But then one by one Welsh edged back to take the championship 21-20.
It was a little easier for Brenda Davies in the ladies final despite another fine performance by Juliet Truran, who had earlier won the pairs title with Doreen Brockes.
Of particular note was a new name on the unisex Creaton Cup, dominated by Welsh and Goodman since its inception but now bearing the name of this year's men's captain Tony Gough.
