THREE tries by Joe Govett helped Haywards Heath to a 26-0 victory over Chobham which means they now need only to win their final match at Maidstone this Saturday to earn automatic promotion back into London 1 South.
It was a fairly swift fall from National League status but Heath have proved this season they are now very much back in business and it was timely that before their last home match there were reminders of the past as well as a glimpse into the future.
At the pre-match lunch it was noted their first ever victory was on April 11, 1958, while Ross Chisholm, a product of the prolific youth production line, presented the club with his England Under-18 cap and shirt.
On a more poignant note, the lunch celebrated the memory of Bill Frankish, a popular former Heath player, youth coach and administrator who sadly died last year. Club chairman Alan Jenkins was presented with the Bill Frankish Memorial Trophy which will be awarded to the winners of the annual charity game between Captain's and Chairman's XVs.
Heath are now firmly in the winning habit and made their now customary flying start as within three minutes Nick Miller powered home from 45 metres out to score under the posts and leave Simon Fifield a simple conversion.
After that Chobham defended stoutly and for all their dominance, Heath had to wait another half an hour before Greg Parkes demonstrated his juggling skills and Govett finished from close range.
Chobham pressed from the restart but when the ball went loose inside the Heath 22, up popped Govett to sprint the length of the pitch and score under the posts. Fifield again added the two points to put the hosts into an unassailable 21-0 lead.
The second half was disjointed as Chobham, weakened physically and mentally by the battering they were taking, suffered a series of injuries.
But before the hour Heath again highlighted their team work and support play as Govett started and finished the move that capped another fine all-round team performance combining grit, hard work and adventure.
Now a win this Saturday will seal the title even if long-time leaders Jersey gain their expected win against lowly Wimbledon.
