With 12 points still to play for, Burgess Hill player-manager Jamie Howell will not be giving up on the play-offs but a second defeat in three days looks like being a fatal blow.
After narrowly losing 1-0 at champions Dover on Saturday, Hillians were less impressive in a 3-0 home defeat by third-placed Tooting & Mitcham.
There were some avoidable goals but Tooting always had the extra edge.
Jason Pinnock broke the deadlock after half an hour and then late errors enabled Jon Henry-Hayden and Paul Vines to make it much worse for the hosts, who lost central defender Tom Edmonds to a hamstring injury just after the opening goal.
Full report in this week's Mid Sussex Times.
