It was a special occasion for Hillians player-manager Jamie howell, who spenyt 10 happy years with Bognor, and he was pleased the way his side matched their illustrious visitors.
He said afterwards: "I thought the players worked really hard and dese
rved a draw."
Not so happy with his team's performance was Bognor boss Mick Jenkins. He thought they were poor and is hoping they have got it out of their system in time for the replay.
Burgess Hill: Stoner; M Piper, Fogden, Gainsford, French; Greenfield, Cotton, Howell, Johnson; Beck, Harper. Subs: J Martin, Carr, P Martin, Lansdale, Westlake.
Bognor: Tardif; Hinshelwood, Hartman, Pearce, Jupp, Whisken, Harris, Smith, Erwuje, Gaisie, Petterfer. Subs: Archer, Clarke, Attwood, Broadbent.
Referee: Ian Bentley. Assistants: Keith Scudder, Ian Fissenden.
HILLIANS sprung a pre-match surprise by including veteran striker Ashley Carr on the subs bench. The club director had come through two reserve matches and clearly it was felt his experience could be valuable against Conference visitors. It was Carr's first appearance for the front side since January 2006.
2 mins: The hosts had the first strike at goal when a swift break enabled Dan Beck to try a shot from distance that was well struck but too high.
3 mins: Bognor immediately broke forward and a long ball cleared big Danny Gainsford only for Steffan Gaisie to run the ball out.
6 mins: It was Bognor who were soon threatening again as Matt Hartman crossed from the left and Elvis Erwuje ballooned over what was a decent chance.
15 mins: There then followed a spell of largely midfield stalemate before Beck got the better of Bognor skipper Duncan Jupp but the attempted lob was well off target. Jupp clearly felt he was fouled but the referee did not agree.
26 mins: Hillians hopes rose when Scott Harris conceded a free kick centrally 30 yards out for a foul on Lloyd Cotton. It was well within the range of home skipper Steve Harper but he was way too high.
28 mins: That prompted Rocks back to life and in the next couple of minutes there were a couple of let-offs for them from free kicks at the other end.
From the first Jupp drove the ball across goal and Gaisie had his shot blocked and then Sam Pearce glanced his header wide from Carl Petterfer's cross.
38 mins: Pearce went in the book for a foul.
44 mins: After a scrappy spell where both sides gave the ball away carelessly and often, Bognor produced the slickest move of the match and Hillians were grateful Matt Piper was aware of the danger, intercepting superbly.
At the end of the first half, both sides probably went off happy enough with their efforts. But it was fairly ordinary fare for spectators,
with the teams working hard and largely cancelling each other's efforts.
Hillians would have been heartened to know they were kicking towards their favoured clubhouse goal in the second round.
47 mins: Again Hillians had the first chance of the half and it was a good one too. Harper released Reuben French down the left and Beck headed his near post cross just wide under intense pressure.
50 mins: There was excellent advantage by the referee when Gainsford had several tugs at Gaisie's shirt and after the Bognor man hit his shot tamely wide, Mr Bentley quite rightly booked the home defender.
56 mins: French tried his luck from 35 yards but it was fairly routine for Bognor keeper Chris Tardif.
57 mins: At the other end Ben Johnson conceded a free kick in a dangerous position and an excellent effort by Jupp was equally well saved by Craig Stoner.
63 mins: Stoner was again in action as he got everything behind a neat shot on the turn by Gaisie after a cross by Hartman.
66 mins: The first change was made by Bognor as Tom Clarke replaced Erwuje.
70 mins: Gaisie was fortunate to get a second chance to pull a low save from Stoner, who then did even better to thwart him at the near post moments later.
72 mins: Good work by Beck on the left prompted Jamie Whisken to pull him back and that earned the Rocks defender the inevitable yellow card.
74 mins: Hillians' Johnson unleashed a well struck effort from fully 30 yards and Tardif was grateful to see the ball flash just wide of his righthand post.
76 mins: Hillians make their first change, bringing on the club's leading scorer Ashley Carr for the ineffectual Greenfield.
78 mins: Bognor replace Harris with James Archer.
81 mins:There is a booking for visiting sub Clarke, apparently for something he said.
Carr, carrying a little extra weight after his long absence, struggled to get into the pace of the game but he did win a couple of headers to give a glimpse of former glory.
90+4: James Martin replaced Hillians player-manager Jamie Howell.
