Preston Nomads restored their pride after last week's heavy defeat at Eastbourne by bouncing back to defeat Hastings by a massive 176 runs at Fulking in the Sussex League.
Three Bridges, also heavily beaten a week earlier, enjoyed a surprise home win against Eastbourne, while champions Brighton & Hove improved on a poor start to the season by holding Cuckfield.

Other hosts held to a draw were Horsham (against East G
rinstead) and Stirlands (against near-neighbours Chichester). It means seven of the 10 clubs have each won one game so far and the reigning champions are currently bottom.

Michael Gould (67) and skipper Kashif Ibrahim (61), helped by an extras total inflated by some wayward bowling, took Preston Nomads to a formidable 298-6 as Mick Glazier (3-81) was the pick of the visiting bowlers.
Hastings were then sent tumbling for just 122 as Nick Hobbs grabbed 5-58 and met only limited resistance, mainly from Adam Maraj-Newman (35).
There were runs-a-plenty at Three Bridges where Eastbourne, batting first, declared at 252-4 as Mark Tomsett hit 153 not out and Jack Hepburn made 54. For Bridges, Danny Alderman took 2-37.

The hosts took up the challange as skipper Mark Newell (53), Alderman (54) and Sam Alborough (40no) led them to a five-wicket victory.

Brighton owed much to tailenders George Ledden (51no) and Matt Wood (43) for their total of 261 all out at Cuckfield. Earlier Tim Jarvis (65) and Matt Machan (35) were prominent before a middle order collapse left Cuckfield in control. Aussie leg-spinner Jason Shelford took 6-74 and James Thorpe 2-12 but the home side's slow over rate cost them two points.

In reply Cuckfield reached 224- 7 at the close, with 44 each from John Walter and Peter Widdup, and 39 from Tom Mole. Wood completed a good all-round performance with 3-42.

Horsham were also frustrated by the lower order after making 228-8 themselves against East Grinstead. In that total Michael Thornely hit 97 and Luke Marshall 54 as Craig Fowle grabbed 3-74.

Will Beer then took 4-73 but despite the hosts having four overs at the last pair, it ended in a draw.

In the local derby at Stirlands, the hosts rattled up a mighty 296-7 as Max Barson hit 53 and Anthony Elder 61. For Chichester Mark Bamford took 3-31.

David Leaver made 68 in the reply but found partners hard to come by and at the close Chi were hanging on at 169-9.

It is a similar story in Division 2, where eight of 10 clubs have each won one match out of two played. Despite being beaten by Haywards Heath, Lewes Priory head the table but five teams are split by just four points after other wins on Saturday for Littlehampton, Steyning and Worthing.

Lewes declared at 224-8 against Haywards Heath after Simon Allen made 66 not out and Tom Sharpe 39 not out. After bowling well without luck the previous week, Heath newcomer JJ Davies grabbed 3-35.

The visitors then won in a tight finish by just two wickets as skipper Steve Kingcome hit 64 and Tom Dowdall made 42. Allen was an unlucky loser after taking 3-71, while John Aspin grabbed 4-51.

It was a special day for Worthing veteran John Kaye, who hit a maiden league century in steering his side to a seven-wicket win after Sidley set a target of 243-9. Elliot Bullock top scored with 73 as Kyle Bowes took 4-67.

Kaye then cracked 121 not out and Ollie Rogers made 71 as victory came in only 39 overs.

Littlehampton enjoyed a seven-wicket victory at home to St James's Montefiore after dismissing them for 171, of which Lewis Hatchett made 50 and Jack Richardson 33. For the home side Aussie Angus Webster took 4-41 and Luke Vinter 2-23.

Webster then hit 50 and skipper Benn Challen 59 to steer Littlehampton home at 172-3. Hatchett was an unlucky loser after taking 2-34.
Steyning won a tight game by 17 runs at home to Pulborough after declaring at 206-6, of which Gary Hunt made 91 not out. But it was Ian Simpson who proved the matchwinner with superb figures of 8-55.

Roffey suffered their second defeat in successive weeks when losing by four wickets to Bexhill despite making what looked a formidable 280-9. Alan Gill (91) and Aussie Sam Adams (63) led the way to that total despite Chris Topp taking 4-69.
But then Jonathan Haffenden took up the challenge with 92 and with good support from Sam Aspin (50no) helped Bexhill secure a four-wicket win.
