Rangers romp through

St Francis Rangers needed extra time to get through their debut match in the FA Vase but no such extension was needed at the second time of asking as they demolished a Lordswood side that had smashed the hopes of County League leaders Ringmer 4-0 in the previous round.
Despite that Vase win, Chatham-based Lordswood are currently bottom of the Kent League and Rangers made them look like strugglers with a powerful performance in difficult conditions to earn a 5-1 away win.
A strong wind blowing across the pitch posed problems for both sides but Rangers created three good chances in the first 15 minutes, with Phil Gault denied by a post and sam Jeremiah and Jake Forward both going close.
But it was 36 minutes before they went ahead as Iain Wood set Forward free on the right and his penetratimng cross was slid past home keeper Don Noden by the alert Sam Jeremiah.
Two minutes later and it was 2-0 as Chris Maynard flighted over and excellent free kick that Wood slotted in at the far post.
Lordswood were much more aggressive in their tackling at the start of the second half and they paid a high price on 65 minutes when No 10 Barry Beaney received a second yellow card from referee Babatunde Adebayo.
But before that Rangers had already sewn up victory with a third goal. Wood, Jeremiah and Maynard had all had chances before on 59 minutes Jeremiah tucked away his second goal.
It was subs Geoff Pitcher and Sam Palmer who combined to produce the furth goal six minutes later. Pitcher's delightful chip enabled Forward to set up a simple tap-in for Palmer, who had replaced Jeremiah only five minutes earlier.
Palmer also completed the scoring with a glancing header on 76 minutes when Forward was again the provider.
In the end it could have been more for the visitors as Wood, Tom Djamaluddin, Gault, Ian Breeds and Dan O'Farrell all had chances before the hosts bagged a consolation four minutes into stoppage time when Darren Bridges scored from a goalmouth melee.
Rangers boss Dan Bryan said afterwards: "Considering the difficult conditions, I thought we were strong and played with a lot of purpose and belief. It was a great occasion for the club and with three wins in a row our confidence is high. Competition for places is also increasing."
The reward for victory is a trip to Molesey in the second qualifying round on November 15. Molesey are now in the Combined Counties after being relegated from Ryman 1 South last season.
Rangers: Lehkyj; Djamaluddin, B Palmer, O'Farrell, Butler; Forward, Gacias, Wood, Maynard; Jeremiah, Gault. Subs: Pitcher (Gacias, 45), S Palmer (Jeremiah, 66), Breeds (Maynard, 74).
Middy Starman: A good, all-round team performance but it goes to Jake Forward who excelled in setting up three of the goals.
