THE prolific Johann Brouwer proved the thorn in the side of St Andrews on Saturday as he kept his Southwater side firmly at the top of the Invitation Cricket League Division 2 in a game of fluctuating fortunes.
After putting in their hosts, Southwater had to wait for their first success, finally breaking the opening partnership at 78 when Iain Murray was dismissed for 25.
Nick Elkins (pictured) was next out at 91 for 43 and although the next pair, Ben Carruthers and Ray Cully, made contributions, Brouwer (6-27) and skipper Jason ten Hoorn Boer (4-38) dismissed Saints for a disappointing 164.
But it looked like being enough as Carruthers (4-41) and Elkins (2-33) helped reduce Southwater to 108-7 before Greg Young offered Brouwer (62no) bleated support to help seal a two-wicket win.
Meanwhile, St Andrews II romped to a nine-wicket win in their Division 1 match at Southwater.
After putting in their hosts, Saints bowled them out for 188 and then Matt Silk (96no) and Paul Norman (72no) figured in an unbroken stand of 173 to complete the job in some style.
